On The Recent Suicide of A Person Who Should Be Remembered
Fr. David is my Ph104 professor. He is supposedly one of Ateneo's "legends."
Mr. Lorenz Tan was his teaching assistant.
We took Mr. Tan for granted.
We called him odd.
We didn't take him seriously.
He killed himself today.
He had problems.
We didn't realize.
After all, he too was a victim of a disciplinary society.
Ateneo's disciplinary society.
Our disciplinary society.
We should learn then.

Hong Kong Style Noodles
Oh! Cruel third world dish from hell!
I rue the day that hunger led me in deliriousness to savor your ware!
Beansprouts and noodles tossed nonchalantly on heated stone.
Hardened dumplings thrown into the lot.
All tossed into a paper bowl.
Flung to me as alms unto a beggars' needy hands.
Heartless sustenance.
Do what you wish with the wretched dish!
Mix what you want!
Pour what you may!
Peanut oil! oyster sauce! chili flakes!
Still, hunger leads my mouth to water.
It opens, and saliva drips upon the horrid mess.
Eyes close.
The first bite is taken...
Oh cruel irony! Oh twisted fate!
That in this horrid dish, so divine a taste!
The snap of crispy sprouts!
Of uncooked mien!
The pinching taste of garlic!
The flaming chili's steam!
A meld of heaven's will in a demon's bowl!

Oldest Philippine University et al.
What is is oldest university in the Philippines?
The Royal and Pontifical University of Sto. Tomas: 1611
What was the first university in the Philippines?
The Great Royal and Pontifical University of St. Ignatius: 1587
(Great because the original name is Universidad Maximo de San Ignacio)
so wow... I never knew... hahaha lalang... Here we are celebrating 150 years of God knows what, and really, by some weird freak history... the first Philippine Jesuit university is 421 years old.
When you think about it... some people say that the Philippines wasn't very gender biased because the first girl's school (Sta. Isabel) was established only 20 years after UST, which most people think was the first Philippine college, but it actually came 44 after... wala lang...
Here's the clincher... when the UMdSI was abolished... a part of it remained. The San Jose College which was part of UMdSI continued under secular priests until it was turned over to the Jesuits in the 1960s... the San Jose Major Seminary as it is now called basically requires it's student's to take Philosophy in Ateneo... so... San Jose College as a College lives on as Ateneo... soo... by some weird truly twisted logic... Ateneo is really 421 years old... HAhahahahHAHHAhHahAhaHhhahAHhaha

Ray of Light in Dark Times
It takes more than saying "I am a hero" to be a hero. It takes more than a singular form of assertive action to change a nation. We all know the reason our country degrades as fast as it does today. We know the problems. What are we doing to remedy them?
"In Philippine public schools, dropout and repetition rates have increased during the last five years, thus causing precious government financial resources to be wasted. Only 68 percent of grade 1 entrants will ever finish grade school, and less than 40 percent will eventually finish high school. More than half of those who do complete the basic education will take up to 16 years to finish what was designed as a 10-year program. Fewer still (23 percent) will reach college, and only 14 percent will eventually receive a university degree. A national survey revealed that the total number of Filipinos between the ages of 6 and 24 not attending school has risen from 9.7 million in 1994 to 11.6 million in 2003."

This is the situation of Philippine public education. Abysmal and seemingly hopeless, what else is heard about it aside from droping test scores and drop-out rates? What we fail to realize though is that for every negative statistic our public education sector has garnered, there is a ray of hope in the form of exemplary heroes that dare to bring our education out of the gutters, and into the light. These ordinary teachers, principals, and school administrators together with the Ateneo Center for Educational Development are all working for a brighter future for Filipino students. There is great hope in public education. We just have to see it. Come share in our success stories!
FAST FACTS:
Lupang Pangako Elementary School rose from a school division rank of 94 (out of 96) in 2000 to a rank of 19 in 2005 through the parternship of ACED and school principal, Benjamin Caling.
Since 1997, the ACED has trained more than 2000 public schools nationwide in Mathematics, Science, English, and Information Technology.

Legion
Class started today. My morning was sort of ruined when I discovered that my old Chem prof. (the one I dropped) is again my instructor for Ch11. Whoopdeedoo.
Second class was my Ph104 class with Fr. Luis David S.J.
I'll start this commentary with a few anecdotes from Fr. David...
Legion: the name of the demon that posessed the demonaic man in the scriptures. Jesus asked, "demon, what is your name?" The demon answered "Legion, for we are many." The demonaic was not simply a single man. We are all demonaics with a legion of dissatisfactions in our being. Jesus asked it's name, and thus it's name, "Legion" was uttered. We though disdain fom naming Legion. We do not like to peer inside ourselves and see the dissatisfaction. We were taught to obey. This builds the dissatisfaction inside. Legion is inside us. The guilt, the fear... only when Legion is named can it be dealt with.
It's only been a day, but allow me to share my initial impessions of the person and the teaching style. He isn't your normal scholastic... Aside fom the fact that he is possibly the most cynical man I've ever met, and he speaks as if the whole of humanity is doomed to semblance, from what I've seen today, he seems to lecture not by concept; but rather, by insight. This is rather peculiar. I'm used to sir Soh's concept by concept approach. The concept approach allows us to formulate our own insights from the concepts discussed. It's like we're given a file folder with files inside. We then analyze why each file belongs in the folder. Fr. David saves us the "trouble" of thinking by giving us a pre thought of insight in it's raw post philosophizing form. We're the ones who now have to categorize it into a concept. It's like being given a file that we have to put into the proper folder. What's good about the concept approach is that analyzing why each file belong in the folder allows us to critically assess, and ask why. The insight method shuts that out. We then use prior knowledge to simply categorize the insight. The thinking then stops. We simply become parrots of his lectures. It ceases to become a personalized thinking experience, and it becomes a spoonfeeding session. That's just my initial impression... I'm sure there is more to all this then what I've seen in an hour and thirty minutes. No real judgments involved. Although this all seems so negative, I would just like to clarify that I honestly think I will love his class. The fact he gives us insights, not concepts, means that he THINKS of insights. He is his philosophy. This should be good.

Pre Pasukan.
I looove the start of class shopping spree :) This years' was absolutely wonderful... here are some now haves, saved up to haves, and have permission to haves :) (did that make sense?)
I lost my beige jacket in CSA... I don't even study there anymore and someone stole it. Thieving kids! so I bought a new one :) red. Mine's a bit darker than this... darker red... and it has a woolen interior. Anyway... still Polo...
I LOVE this Lacoste top. I've been eyeing it for weeks... and then... oh yeah... I love it... wala lang... wala lang... drool...
Of course... since Dacanay's my prof... no more Havs for me :'(... so there :) Bistros! Yay!
The MOST comfortable pants I have ever had were an earlier pair of Lucky Brand Jeans... That was when they used to sell LBJ in Rustans... now... ayun... I'm looking for some sort of outlet or something... or there's always e-bay...
