Welcome to the MikeCab Interviews, where we delve into what's been happening in the world of our favorite character of emotionality and mediocrity!
Interviewer: So, Mickey, how have you been doing?
Mickey: Oh, I've been okay. It's a really stressful semester, but so far it's been bearable.
Interviewer: So has your social life suffered because of the stress?
Mickey: ... surprisingly not. I guess I have a "no school work on Saturdays" rule that allows me some out time.
Interviewer: That's good! What do you do during "out time?"
Mickey: ... I read Foucault.
Interviewer: Isn't Foucault part of your Philo class?
Mickey: Yeah, but Fr. David says reading it shouldn't be a chore, but rather, a hobby.
Interviewer: Okay... What else do you do during "out time?"
Mickey: I read literary criticism on Foucault.
Interviewer: Okay... What is the first thing you do when you wake up on Saturday morning?
Mickey: ... I... think... of Foucault?
Interviewer: And when you sleep? No fantasizing? No Dreams??
Mickey: Foucault?
Interviewer: Then what the hell do you do during breaks on school days?!
Mickey: I... read Foucault?
Interviewer: EVERYDAY!?!?!
Mickey: On Tuesdays at 1:30 I do my Chemistry lab reports...
Interviewer: Okay... then?
Mickey: at about 4 I start reading Foucault.
Interviewer: How many books of his have you read?! It must be at least ten by now!
Mickey: Well... two...
Interviewer: After all that time!?!?!
Mickey: Well... 2 books by him and 3 literary criticism books on him. It's only been a month.
Interviewer: That's still slow by your book.
Mickey: It's hard... This isn't Harry Potter you know. IT'S HARD!!!! It's like reading John Donne, but harder... (starts crying)
Interviewer: I thought you enjoyed this?
Mickey: I do... or I just say so because I'm really scared of Fr. David... No! I do enjoy it! It's FUN!!!!! FUN I TELL YOU!!!! FUN!!!! (cries louder)
Interviewer: Do I sense sarcasm?
Mickey: (abruptly stops crying) surprisingly, no... I mean it. Foucault's a good read (stares at camera, winks, thumbs up, camera zooms in on face and thumb)
Interviewer: Any final words?
Mickey:... hmmm... J.A.P.A.N. ... T.C.C.I.C.! Foucault rocks!
And.... That is all.
I rise from rejection, to bring you...
"The Filipino Concept of Retributional Punishment: It's Differentiation into 'Karma' and 'Ganti' "
BAM!!!
ret·ri·bu·tion
| 1. | requital according to merits or deserts, esp. for evil. |
| 2. | something given or inflicted in such requital. |
| 3. | Theology. the distribution of rewards and punishments in a future life. |
I was supposed to study the Philippine concept of retribution right? When I started researching though, I couldn't find a proper translation for retribution. All that came out was "paghihiganti" and "karma." It then hit me that the Philippine concept (by applying Sapir-Whorf) is divided into personal revenge, and divine retribution. There is no concept of general retribution wherein someone, by whatever means, gets requited. HAHAHAHAHHAHA
my method will be to interview about 10 respondents using the "pakikipagkwentuhan" and that other Zeus Salazar thing... whatever the term is... I'll gather their thoughts on karma, paghihiganti, and which for them is a more proper form of "punishment." Lalalalalalala hahaha I hope this one doesn't get rejected...
My proposal was rejected today.
As in I wanted to cry. I worked so hard on it. 30+ journal articles read... basically a sems's worth of Filipsy reading c/o U.P... all to be told that it isn't "relevant to the current situation," and that it's "too complicated."
"Affectivity of Affixed Filipino Words Versus Their Non-Affixed Filipino, and English Language Counterparts." *hikbi* oh, my baby!
Weird story... post rejection...
DL: Are you into Linguistics Mic?
Me: *nods head*
DL: So you're really into language?
Me: (in my head) DO I BREATHE!?!?
Me: (in reality) yeah.
Anyway... a few minutes after leaving the department teary eyed, I though of a topic that would be simpler, and more cognitive (without the behavior analysis.) I thought of researching on the Filipino paradigm on coping mechanisms for failure, or the Filipino concept of retribution/revenge, or the Filipino concept of "poot." Positive Psychology my foot. This is Negative Psychology: Cognitive Edition. I hate being put down, but I have to accept the reality that things like this do happen. I accept my fate, and decide to move on. Yeabo. Is this maturity? I hope so.
We had a special guest last Tuesday in Fr. David's ethics class. His name's Raul Lejano, and he's a professor from the University of California-Irvine department of planning, policy, and design. He's basically an urban planning specialist. He was supposed to give a lecture on the current research in planning theories and environmental policy, and how Foucault (bless his structuralist soul) was the unconscious core of it. He did in a sense do what he was supposed to, but more than that, he spoke forgotten truths about the world. Let me share some of these:
(note: summarizing concepts are of my authorship, and are not directly quoted from Dr. Lejano)
a. "Paradigms are the effect of institutions, not of individuals." He discussed the market system, and how this view of "me, my immediate reality, this cup of coffee, and the price tag" has instilled a deficit of concern for others into society. In Foucault's terms, the very structure of the market, or in a mini sense, the supermarket, ensures that all we really percieve is ourselves, the object, and the price tag. The paradigm then becomes self-consumerist centered.
b. "Man is at his fullest in the doing of the good." Dr. Lejano stressed that although the institution (that is market) theoretically instills self-consumerist centered ideas, the reality is that humanity is in fact, still human. He cited the "Ultimatum Game" experiment, which proved, when annexed to a bunch of prior read philosophical and theological texts, proved that intrinsically, humans still value other members of his own species. No matter how much of a stranger a person is, once an instance sees them connected even in a faint way, relationality automatically ensures they respect the other.
c. "Humanity is Relationality." Lejano gave the case study of how the turtle island deals with poachers. The people in charge of the turtle islands don't punish the offenders, but rather, they go to the community from where the offender is from, and they talk to the offender, and the offender's immediate circle. They talk to his friends and family about turtle island, the importance of it, and why they seek to protect it. They relate turtle island with the people. Then they invite the offender to help them out for a few days, so that he too can be a part of the experience. They bridge gaps between misunerstanding parties. Turtle island becomes more than a place to steal turtle eggs. It becomes a part of them as well. When you relate something to a person which was priorly totally unrelated to him, it becomes familliar. It becomes respectable.
d. "Networks are the future of the market system." What then happens if consumers get to meet the coffee farmers who grow your coffee? What happens when we see his foot hurts because of his coffee growing? Do we simply pay for our coffee and walk away? Intrinsically, no man would. Co existence requires co responsibility. There is circumstance, and there is humanity behind the product. We have to go beyond our world of "me, my immediate reality, this cup of coffee, and the price tag" to see that so much more has to be done. Relationality ensures co responsibility. We just have to see how someone, seemingly a stranger is connected to you, in order for care and co responsibility to take hold of our natural relational selves.
My basic point is this... After 20 years of living, and approximately 7 years of having Filipino economists, sociologists, and political scientists bitch to me all day in class about markets, and how the market system leads to impersonality and lack of relationality, without any of them even speaking of progress, or (dare I say) a solution, it's nice to hear that at the other end of the world, someone, a fellow Filipino, studies these problems as well, and he has come back to us if only for a brief moment to say, "There is progress. There is a change." Things do not have to be the way they are. We do not have to be what economists figure us out to be. We are more than consumers who care only for goods, services, and prices. We are people who are at our fullest at the doing of the good.
PART 2 INTELLECTUAL WHORING:
I asked Fr. Dacanay if the Theo department offers any electives aside from the required 4 core Theology subjects. He explained that there was, and he asked me...
"Are you interested in Theology Mic?"
I answered "for electives, yeah."
he asked, "What's your course?"
I answered, "Psych, Fr."
he asked, "You wish to go to med school? B.S. right?"
I answered, "Yeah, I might. It's arbitrary. I'm not sure yet."
he said, "Aaah."
a weird awkward silence followed.
Then he said, "Balimbing. Willing to sell your interests to the highest bidder."
He wasn't talking to me directly... He was talking to air really.. or maybe to someone else...No... it was probably me.
I wan't offended though. It's true. As of now, I am an intellectual whore. I sell my interests to the highest bidder.
I could have told the truth... That Theology is my LOVE. I feel that it is my calling, but that the reality of poverty hinders me.... but even in truth, I am still, since I still do fear, am an intellectual whore. I'm not offended.

8. If the person you secretly like is already attached, what would you do?
Love requires the growth of both. If she grows without me, then let her grow. I shall not wither as long as she does grow.

Falling in love with two people... I could "fall" in love with two people, but I can only love one. :)
19. What type of friends do you like?

This is what I would look like if I were female... assuming I got the same traits and whatever... or this is what I would look like if I were korean and had weird hair... HAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!! I love photoshop :)
This is soooo WTF!?!??!
anyway.. I'm doin fine... Fr. David still scares me.
Step one you say we need to talk
He walks you say sit down it's just a talk
Unknowingly, you entered the car, the four of us facing you, smiling, sharing drinks, chips, trapping you by locking the door. You never knew I knew. I didn't want to believe them. I didn't want to lose you.
He smiles politely back at you
You stare politely right on through
Plastic smiles, while in truth, my soul was tearing me apart. Your laugh, the innocence of your situation... This is a trap. This is our trap. We've caught you. I didn't want to.
Some sort of window to your right
As he goes left and you stay right
"Hey, did you know something went wrong while we were together?" Let them lay the blame. They say it was you. I don't want that to be true. I can't do it. I will not admit losing you until I need to.
Between the lines of fear and blame
And you begin to wonder why you came
"Really? It wasn't me!"
Where did I go wrong, I lost a friend
Somewhere along in the bitterness
All you needed to do was to talk to me. I shared my soul with you. All I needed was for you to show you trusted me. You don't after all.
And I would have stayed up with you all night
Had I known how to save a life
We would have been there. Too bad you didn't care.
Let him know that you know best
Cause after all you do know best
"We're here to help." We all mean what we say. You are a friend. We're here together aren't we? AREN'T WE!?!?!?!?
Try to slip past his defense
Without granting innocence
"Have you NOTHING to tell me? NOTHING is wrong? This is ME! We're friends... we're friends..."
Lay down a list of what is wrong
The things you've told him all along
Proof spills out indefinetely, and her face whitens in fear and shock. "Fine. it's true. Now leave."
And pray to God he hears you
And pray to God he hears you
My heart wrenches. Fom her mouth, came the bitter truth that is both pain and salvation. My hands begin to tremble, and my eyes begin to water. It's about you. It's not about what you've done. We're your friends, not the friends of your actions.
Where did I go wrong, I lost a friend
Somewhere along in the bitterness
You treat it as if you were forced to admit. it's as if we were only after our losses. We're NOT HERE FOR YOUR ACTIONS. WE'RE HERE FOR YOU! WE'RE YOUR FRIENDS! NOT THE FRIENDS OF YOUR ACTIONS! We're still your friends.
And I would have stayed up with you all night
Had I known how to save a life
You will probably never show yourself to us again. As if anyone else would ever entreat you to. I HATE YOU. You never even bothered to trust us. You never trusted me. I trusted you... even through everything you did to me.
As he begins to raise his voice
You lower yours and grant him one last choice
I wish you'd just let it all out. Your silence proves your arrogance. We may have caught you, but we can never take your dignity. Is that it?
Drive until you lose the road
Or break with the ones you've followed
"Just don't do it again." She won't listen to us. She listens to the fear of being caught.
He will do one of two things
He will admit to everything
You admitted to everthing after all. We gain what we have lost, but we lose you. Was it worth losing you? I hope not...
Or he'll say he's just not the same
And you'll begin to wonder why you came
I don't know why I still cry at night over you. I don't think you deserve anyone's tears. It's just that I promised to be your friend forever, and you did too.
Where did I go wrong, I lost a friend
Somewhere along in the bitterness
I just wanted you to trust me, like I trusted you. Although I really can't, I did. I still do. I believe in you.
And I would have stayed up with you all night
Had I known how to save a life
In the end, I really have no power over your life. None at all. I don't know if I can ever believe you again, but I will trust you. I will trust you with my life. You are still my friend. I still love you.
