10 Things Atenean can do to Save the Environment

10 Things the atenean can do to save the Environment

(by Lars, Mandz, Ning, Tammie and Mic)

  1. Paperless University - Have you ever stopped and thought about the amount of paper the University uses on a daily basis? Just observing a single xerox lady’s booth as she goes through her work pile, it’s sickening. The sad part is technology has come to the point when mountains and mountains of redundant paperwork isnt even necessary anymore. Email, blogs and the possibilty of downloadable content can greatly reduce the amount of paper in circulation at our school. While it owuld be impossible (and unwise) to completely eliminate the use of paper, encouraging digital alternatives is a step in the right direction.
  2. Handout Recycling - Let’s be honest, alot of teachers repeat the same assignments and requirements sem after sem. For those of us who already have mountains of photocopied material, a good way of getting rid of them would be to donate them to orgs who can then redistribute it to the incoming lower years.
  3. Shuttle Service - An EFFECTIVE and ORGANIZED implementation of a shuttle service would greatly reduce the amount of cars in the community (especially with the economic crisis). While shuttle services have been tried before, they were always done in a half hearted way. A new system would need a wider range of loations as well as dedicated vehicles.
  4. Waterless Urinals - Guys, all of us have seen this when we use public restrooms in malls and restaurants. It always comes with this tiny banner that tells you that when you pee yo’re saving X,XXX gallons of water every year. Maybe it’s time to find out if it’s true?
  5. Bottle Drive - While the BYOB system has been succesful in reducing the use of disposable utensils and plates there is still the nagging problem of bottled beverages. Dedicated bottle depositories will help reduce litter as well as generate some extra income.
  6. Be Responsible - If you see a crumpled ball of failed quizes on the floor. Pick it up and throw it away. Even if it’s not yours. Simple.
  7. Reuse - All those plastic bags you accumulate from buying stuff? Don’t throw them away. Re-use them as trashcan liners or plant holders. Be creative.
  8. Save Water - Take baths instead of showers. USe a cup when brushing your teeth instead of letting the faucet run continuously.
  9. Don’t Waste Electricity - Turn off the lights when you don’t use them. Switch off the television while you’re studying, trust us you’ll do just fine without it. Common sense is your bestfriend, if you can do without it. Turn it off.
  10. Spread the Faith! -So you’ve religously followed all the other 9 rules and you’ve turned yourself into a lean, green ecofriendly machine. What next? Get others to do the same ofcourse. Goodluck!
