Interviewer: Welcome back Mic!

Mic: It's good to be back, random interviewer person...

Interviewer: You can call me Sid.

Mic: Sid. Hi Sid!

Interviewer: Hi... Anyway! So, how are you and Michel Foucault?

Mic: We... had a falling out.

Interviewer: What happened?

Mic: He... was too intense. I couldn't take the pressure anymore...

Interviewer: Did he... abuse you?

Mic: Yes! Oh, it was horrible... tears in my eyes, endless cups of coffee, and bloodied fingers! The pain... the pain...

Interviewer: There, there... It's over for now... how are you feeling?

Mic: I... I'm fine I think...

Interviewer: Have you moved on?

Mic: No... I know deep in my heart that I will take Foucault back... We'redestined to meet again...

Interviewer:Eh?

Mic: but for the meanwhile, Irvine Welsh and Woody Allen have made great temporary partners.

Interviewer: Are you thinking of going serious with any of them?

Mic: Unfortunately not... I mean Irvine Welsh is GREAT... I mean multiple (intellectual) orgasms per night, true as well for Woody Allen... plus they both make me laugh, which is something I haven't done in a long while, but... They're not the type to take seriously. I mean, I could imagine taking Irvine Welsh seriously, but now is just not the time to do that...

Interviewer: How about Stephanie Meyer?

Mic: We had a few dates... doesn't interest me.

Interviewer: Neil Gaiman?

Mic: I've already used him up. There's nothing more to see really... so unless something new comes up with him, we're done.

Interviewer: The same goes for J.K. Rowling?

Mic: Hehehe, I just used that bitch for fun. I didn't take her seriously at all.

Interviewer: There we go, maybe your experience with Foucault is literary karma.

Mic: Maybe...

Interviewer: Well anyway... It\s gladto see you backon your feet again.

Mic: Yeah, I'm glad for me too.

Interviewer: Any parting words?

Mic: Yes, I would just like to invite everyone to watch "Lipstick" on TV5! Mikee Lee is not cute in person, but the chubby mestiza is.

Why I Am Better Than Edward Cullen (Arraiza, 2008)

Transit

As an adolescent, I spent a lot of time in transit. In transit in the sense that each day was a day of constant self revision, but also in the literal sense that I was always riding some sort of public transportation vehicle. Public transportation offers a world view untouched by restraint. It is at 6 or 7 in the evening that I find journeying most interesting, because it is at that time when I find people tend to occupy the whole spectrum of emotion. It is at this time that I find people at their best, or at their worst. Being in literal transit with other people is the best lesson in human nature there is. The problem is that most people who are in transit either have a stubbornly fixed world view, or they have a centrated or maybe even an apathetic world view. When one is receptive to the scenes of transit though, that is when learning can truly begin. Abigail Adams once said that learning is to be “sought for with ardor.” Without the prerequisite openness to learning, nothing will be learned.

The beauty of the Dao De Jing is that it is highly phenomenological. It is precisely that fact, added to that the insight that each minute in transit is a treasure trove of sensory perception, and the truth of the mind of the open youth as highly malleable and inquisitive, that makes the point of Youth in transit as a perfect period for insight. Youth is a time of identity formation. I, a youth in constant transit try to experience the world around me, in the given time I experience it, in order to make sense of, and find my place in the world. In this sense, the world I move in directly affects my person. I cannot look at myself simply as an entity fully divorced from the reality around me. The fact that I perceive and dwell on my perceptions are proof enough that it is precisely the world I move in that allows me to learn, and from learning, discerning who I may or may not want to be, and from there finally forming an identity. The same is true in reverse, because I, being one with reality, am part of the perceived world of all the others around me. I am not merely myself, but rather a proactive fragment of existence that is co-molded along with all other things existent.

When I commute, I discover that the world is in constant change. The cool breeze and falling leaves of February give way to the humid heat of March. In ten years of commuting home, Mark, who mans the internet cafe I pass by everyday on my way home has evolved from a young Communications student from UST doing part time work in an internet cafe to a balding 34 year old man who now mans the internet cafe full time. What is important to see though is that although I say Mark has moved from young student to balding man, he has gone through many psychosocial changes as well as physical changes. This is why my memory of Mark is segmented into a thousand Marks, beginning at “young friendly Mark ten years ago” and which current definition is at “balding Mark who told me to not step on the grass this morning.” It is just the same with a million other things I see along the way. Buildings undergo renovation, old squatter areas become new parks, and the people I co-experience reality with during my commute are never the same as the people the day before. Things I had experienced the day before are never the same things I experienced the day before that, nor are they the same as my experience today. This now dictates that what I perceive continually undergoes constant change, and the effects of those constant changes are perceived by me as milestones in time, just as a continuous stream of points on a plain make a line. What differentiates one dot from another of the same entity is how much importance I put into it. Importance must be put into it precisely because not doing so will be a great injustice to the individual milestones in time. In the human sense, it is dehumanization. We view the dots as individual dots. It is important to do so, but we must never forget that the dot is simply a part of the line. Chemistry, known as the “central science” also supports this point in the fact that in every atom that comprises a mass, energy is continually being used, and the particles of that atom continuously move in set patterns of movement. So fundamentally speaking, everything is a process. Nothing is ever “still” as in the conceptual idea of a photograph.

What then will I do, knowing of my proactive participation in existence? Being a proactive entity, I understand that all I do has corresponding consequences. Also, with the insight that existence is a constant process, I realize that coercive action towards existence is futile. It would be like trying to stop the rain from falling. I now have to move in accordance to the flow, while taking into account the uniqueness of each milestone in time. I cannot help but look back at Mark. In dealing with Mark, I must know that he is a proactive being that is constantly in transit. I recognize that he is a different Mark than the one I had originally met ten years ago. That is Dao, the constant flow of change. That goes hand in hand with seeing the fact of Mark’s change, I must also take into light the form of Mark that I am concurrent with. If I do not do so, I will not be able to make a decision as to how I will address or treat Mark. If he is grumpy at the point of interaction, I would probably act lowly. If he is congenial, I will talk to him as a friend. It’s all about mirroring the current state of Mark, as to analyze best how to act in the situation. If I am unaware of constant change, I would treat Mark as I would treat him during our initial encounter 10 years ago. If I was unaware of his defined current state, I wouldn’t know how to interact with him at all.

In summary, balance is the point of existence. I am proactive existent, who affects and is affected by reality so that I may be able to find internal equilibrium of identity. I am aware of the ceaseless transformation of reality, which without it would mean no change at all since change is the direct consequence of change. Inertia says so. I see the world solely from my own perspective, and it is by that perspective that I am proactive participant in constant change. I interact with the world, with the knowledge of this constant change, and the fact that to be able to interact, I need to mirror the De, or the individuality of experience. All this aimed at keeping balance in the world. Non coercion leads to a balanced world, while coercive action will only lead to disequilibrium. The world, like I, is in constant transit. We need to be aware of the stations to be able to get down at the correct one.

Mascara Day Night: From Chemistry to Monogamy

Iris came to the spa last Saturday with Tita Lolit. They arrived at . I was supposed to be in Greenbelt by 8, but knowing my friends, they'd be there at 10. Iris wasn't allowed to go, but since Verna was going to be there... what the hell right?! She had me try on some of her eyeliner. I need to return to kindergarten. I have to learn to follow the dotted line. My eyeliner mark was half an inch off target. Since I made a complete idiot of myself, I had to take the damn liner off. Iris offered her moisturizer. She said It would help take the ink off my face. I poured some on my tissue. It felt like KY jelly. Eww. I teasingly told her that it did in fact seem like KY jelly. She laughed and said I was wrong. I used the mush to clean up my eyes. (TAKING OF EYELINER FUCKING HURTS. I wanted to cry. I don't want to be a girl.) She then said it was the moisturizer her tita used for wiping her cousin's butt. Nice. Thoroughly scandalized, I gave Iris the "look" that says "I sooo f-ing hate you right now." Anyway, we finally got to GB at 820. Nina and Melvin (who the hell still calls him that?) were already there. Meg (the dramatic queer that he is) arrived at 10, wearing what looked like something he bought at the "pinoy style" section of stereotypical SM depatment store. We went to Chimara to eat tofu. I f-ing ate tofu. I liked it. I might go Pesci again in a month. Verna arrived at 11. We had a nice hug-hug puls million photos reunion. I miss Verna. She's was the only normal one in the group. We got to gossiping about our batchmates. Then we moved on to relationships... Then Mary arrived at 1215. We really are Filipinos... anyway.. It's just weird that the last conversation we had as a group was regarding where to go clubbing after the graduation ball. In my case it was "what will I drink?" (I ended up taking 2 Bailey's shots and 2 Kahlua shots.) Now, we talked about where our life was heading. Cheers of "Magpakasal na Kayo" for Nina and Paski, "You'll find the one" for Meg, "They seem so perfect for each other" for Mary, "He's so possesive. How do you see this relationship moving forward" for Verna, "You're so quiet na" for Iris, and "Why didn't I know about this" for me. Maturity bites, but I guess through all the panotness and lose/gain weight... we're coping.

Coloring Porn

Okay, so bored as I was, I had to do SOMETHING... So I regressed a bit and colored. Yes, I colored, as in coloring book colored. The difference though between a 5 year old and me is that I have photoshop, and my coloring book isn't suitable for kids 18 and below >.< I found the image on ~humbuged's deviant art... anyway... We travelled through U belt, taking note of structures of disciplinarity:

Transport: how need is demoted to a simple foolish whim.

Then to the city jail, not prison, but penetentiary.

PART II (I/O is LOVE!)

Then the next day, I went to PAL Training Institute in order to get a hands on experience of Training and Development in Asia's First Airline. The Training system is so juicily (is that a word) complex, that I want to chop it up into modules and analyze each part.Then I want to create competenciers for every module. It's so fun. Weeeeeee... I/O is fun! Oh and we met the graduating batch of future stewards/stewardesses... They're hot. As in. It's so cool when they started shouting "Emergency! Head down!" over and over again with matching actions... It was like a beauty contest for angry people. Anyway... they're nice, and highly intelligent people. That's really what matters right? So boys and girls, find yourself a steward/stewardess to settle down with... or a pilot. Brains Brawn and Bucks. It's like Chris Tiu but with free air fare.

Mickey: Oh, I've been okay. It's a really stressful semester, but so far it's been bearable.

Interviewer: So has your social life suffered because of the stress?

Mickey: ... surprisingly not. I guess I have a "no school work on Saturdays" rule that allows me some out time.

Interviewer: That's good! What do you do during "out time?"

Mickey: ... I read Foucault.

Interviewer: Isn't Foucault part of your Philo class?

Mickey: Yeah, but Fr. David says reading it shouldn't be a chore, but rather, a hobby.

Interviewer: Okay... What else do you do during "out time?"

Mickey: I read literary criticism on Foucault.

Interviewer: Okay... What is the first thing you do when you wake up on Saturday morning?

Mickey: ... I... think... of Foucault?

Interviewer: And when you sleep? No fantasizing? No Dreams??

Mickey: Foucault?

Interviewer: Then what the hell do you do during breaks on school days?!

Mickey: I... read Foucault?

Interviewer: EVERYDAY!?!?!

Mickey: On Tuesdays at 1:30 I do my Chemistry lab reports...

Interviewer: Okay... then?

Mickey: at about 4 I start reading Foucault.

Interviewer: How many books of his have you read?! It must be at least ten by now!

Mickey: Well... two...

Interviewer: After all that time!?!?!

Mickey: Well... 2 books by him and 3 literary criticism books on him. It's only been a month.

Interviewer: That's still slow by your book.

Mickey: It's hard... This isn't Harry Potter you know. IT'S HARD!!!! It's like reading John Donne, but harder... (starts crying)

Interviewer: I thought you enjoyed this?

Mickey: I do... or I just say so because I'm really scared of Fr. David... No! I do enjoy it! It's FUN!!!!! FUN I TELL YOU!!!! FUN!!!! (cries louder)

Interviewer: Do I sense sarcasm?

Mickey: (abruptly stops crying) surprisingly, no... I mean it. Foucault's a good read (stares at camera, winks, thumbs up, camera zooms in on face and thumb)

Interviewer: Any final words?

Mickey:... hmmm... J.A.P.A.N. ... T.C.C.I.C.! Foucault rocks!

"The Filipino Concept of Retributional Punishment: It's Differentiation into 'Karma' and 'Ganti' "

I was supposed to study the Philippine concept of retribution right? When I started researching though, I couldn't find a proper translation for retribution. All that came out was "paghihiganti" and "karma." It then hit me that the Philippine concept (by applying Sapir-Whorf) is divided into personal revenge, and divine retribution. There is no concept of general retribution wherein someone, by whatever means, gets requited. HAHAHAHAHHAHA

my method will be to interview about 10 respondents using the "pakikipagkwentuhan" and that other Zeus Salazar thing... whatever the term is... I'll gather their thoughts on karma, paghihiganti, and which for them is a more proper form of "punishment." Lalalalalalala hahaha I hope this one doesn't get rejected...

As in I wanted to cry. I worked so hard on it. 30+ journal articles read... basically a sems's worth of Filipsy reading c/o U.P... all to be told that it isn't "relevant to the current situation," and that it's "too complicated."

Anyway... a few minutes after leaving the department teary eyed, I though of a topic that would be simpler, and more cognitive (without the behavior analysis.) I thought of researching on the Filipino paradigm on coping mechanisms for failure, or the Filipino concept of retribution/revenge, or the Filipino concept of "poot." Positive Psychology my foot. This is Negative Psychology: Cognitive Edition. I hate being put down, but I have to accept the reality that things like this do happen. I accept my fate, and decide to move on. Yeabo. Is this maturity? I hope so.
